The Resaca Beach Poster Girl Contest was started in 1983 as a joke about Resaca, Georgia, a small (as in tiny!) community near Dalton, GA. Resaca is probably best known for it’s annual re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of Resaca.

The contest has been held annually from 1983-2001 except for 1996-1998.

Contest prize money awarded has exceeded $140,000, plus thousands of dollars in other prizes and personal appearance money for the winners,

Our most famous contestant was our very first winner, Marla Maples (later Trump). We had good taste even back then!!!! QVC’s Lisa Robertson was our 1988 titleholder.

Ron Arnold of Charter Communications in Dalton, GA, is the only person to judge all 21 contests.

Joe Don Griffith, still the Mayor of Resaca, was first elected in a landslide victory over Jim Brown in 1983. He has crowned (and kissed) more winners than anyone, but always in public. As far as we know, he has never lied about these relationships under oath. Maybe that is why he is still the Mayor. He was also a judge again in 2001. Think of Santa Claus with an accent!

Dan Bowen, who founded and directs the event, has been the emcee for each contest.

Entertainment for past contests has included Billy Ray Cyrus, Hank Williams, Jr., The Impressions, The Tams, The Swingin’ Medallions, Bobby Bare, Roger Alan Wade, Clarence Carter, Johnny White and the Elite Band, Shagtime, The Mighty Kicks, ConvertiBull, Cross Plains, Another Fine Mess and comedian James Gregory. And then there was the infamous Pleasant Dreams lingerie stage show!!!!!!!

The contest has been held in six different locations over the years, including the Hyatt Regency Ballroom in Atlanta in 1990. The first event at the new Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton was in 1991.

Commemorative Coke bottles were issued for five contests. They are now collector items. Some are worth over $100.00 each. A Billy Ray Cyrus bottle was issued in 1992

Lisa Robertson (1988) won on her second try. She later became Miss Tennessee (1989), and competed in the Miss America Pageant. She is now a national television personality on the QVC Shopping Network. She had "big hair" in 1988!

Shane Phillips (1993) won on her second try. She also served as Miss Georgia World.

Capri Hodge (2001) won on her second try.

Samantha Burns (1989), Shannon Acuff (1995), and Tenna Reed Cooke (1999) won on their third tries. Shannon later appeared in the movie Dumb and Dumber and in Playboy magazine.

Jennifer Corliss (00) won on her sixth try, and is the leading all-time money winner! She has also won national Hawaiian Tropic, Venus Swimwear, Hit The Beach and Summer Savage titles.

Candace Brown, 2d runner-up in 1990, later became Miss Alabama USA, and was runner-up in the Miss USA Pageant in 1992.

Cindy Burns (1985 winner) and Samantha Burns (1989 winner) are sisters.

Resaca Beach Calendar Girl Holley Dorrough of Gadsen, AL (January 2006) was chosen as Playboy Playmate of the Month for April 2006.

Resaca Beach finalist Spencer Scott (2005 contest) was later named Playboy Playmate of the Month for October 2007.

Calendar Girls Brittany King (June 2007) and Tabitha Gilley (2009 calendar) were in the Women Of Hooters pictorial in the February 2008 issue of Playboy Magazine. In addition, Tabitha was also on the cover of the February-March 2008 25th anniversary issue of Hooters Magazine.

2004 winner Breanne Ashley was crowned Miss Hooters International in Las Vegas during the summer of 2007. She received oer $50,000 in cash and other prizes.

The shortest finalist was 4’11" tall. The tallest was 6’1" tall.

The shortest winner was 5’ 2" tall. The tallest was 5’ 9".

Our oldest contestant was Margaret Holland of Cartersville, GA, who was 50 when she competed in 2001. Margaret also competed in the inaugural contest in 1983!

Contest winners have been photographed for the annual poster in locations such as the Bahamas, Bermuda, St. Croix, Costa Rica, Nashville, Miami Beach, the North Carolina Mountains, and Gulf Shores. They have also traveled to Rio, Italy, England, Aruba, Jamaica, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, San Diego, and many other locations.

Two original winners were later relieved of their duties because they were unable to fulfil the responsibilities of their title. Each was replaced with the respective runner-up.

There have been over 400 finalists in 21 contests.

A Flying-J Travel Plaza now stands at the sight of the original Resaca Beach on the shores of the Oostanaula River, I-75 at exit number 320. This road is now officially named Resaca Beach Boulevard!

The Resaca Beach Society meets at midnight of the first full moon in June at a well-guarded site. Their ritual is secret, and really weird!

Bud Light was a major sponsor from 1987-2000.

The contest has been televised annually on Charter Cable TV.

For the first time ever, in 2001, 14 girls were chosen for the Resaca Beach Bike/Babe Calendar, and we have been publishing calendars ever since.

Detailed information on all previous contests may be found at the Resaca Beach web site at http://www.resacabeach/com.
